Ajman (äjmän`), sheikhdom (1995 pop. 118,812), c.100 sq mi (260 sq km), part of the federation of seven United Arab Emirates United Arab Emirates, federation of sheikhdoms (2005 est. pop. 2,563,000), c.30,000 sq mi (77,700 sq km), SE Arabia, on the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

, SE Arabia, primarily on the Persian Gulf. The smallest member of the federation, Ajman consists principally of a town (1995 pop. 118,812) of the same name and two mountain villages. A former British protectorate, it joined the United Arab Emirates in 1971. Ajman has little industry or agriculture and depends heavily on aid from other Persian Gulf countries.

In 1971 six emirates formerly under the control of the United Kingdom (Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain, Ajman and Fujairah) merged to create the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The remaining seven sheikhdoms--Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras al-Khayma, Um al-Quwayn and Fujaira--chose to join together, and in 1971 the seven emirate leaders elected Sheikh Zayed president of the UAE federation.
