Akhtala 

an urban-type settlement in Tumanian Raion, Armenian SSR, in the Debed River ravine. Railroad station on the Tbilisi-Leninakan line. Population, 5,100 (1967). There is mining of copper and polymetallic ores. Industry includes an ore concentration plant and a construction materials combine. There is a tuberculosis sanatorium. The medieval Akhtala monastery, with paintings dating from the 11th to 13th centuries, is located near the settlement.


Akhtala 

a mud-bath resort in the Georgian SSR; located 122 km from Tbilisi and 0.5 km from the Gurdzhaani Transcaucasian railway station at an altitude of 412 m. Summers are warm (mean July temperature is 23°C), winters mild (mean January temperature is 0°C); the precipitation is approximately 700 mm per year. The curative medium is mud of volcanic origin discharged by the Akhtala mud volcanoes; it is used for baths, applications, and poultices. There is treatment for patients with diseases of the organs of motion and support and the peripheral nervous system and for gynecological patients. There is a sanatorium and mud baths. The season is year round.
