Akureyri (ä`kürā'rē), city (1993 pop. 14,799), N Iceland, at the head of the Eyjafjörður. The second largest city of Iceland, it is a fishing, commercial, and industrial center, producing iron, wooden, and woolen goods. It was settled c.A.D. 900 and chartered in 1786. Iceland Express will launch a twice-weekly service from Akureyri to
Copenhagen on May 30 using MD-90-30s. In the northern town of Akureyri, Hoist,
2005, a new video installation by Matthew Barney based on material shot
in Brazil for his film De Lama Lamina (From Mud, a Blade), 2004, became
spatially and thematically interconnected with Operazione Oesophagus and
the Foodprocessors, 2005, a new composite installation work by Gabriela
Fridriksdottir. Hiking, mountain
climbing, and rock climbing are good all over Iceland but are best in
the north where the weather is sunnier, especially between
Iceland's second-largest town, Akureyri, and spectacular Lake
Myvatin, prime freshwater fishing country. |
