Al Kut (äl k t), town, SE Iraq, on the Tigris River. It is a port and a market center for grains, dates, fruit, and vegetables. There is a large barrage on the Tigris there diverting much of its water to regional irrigation canals (Shatt el Gharraf). Much of the town was destroyed during World War I; in 1915 the Turks halted the British advance toward Baghdad there, beseiging them for 143 days. The British retook Al Kut in Feb., 1917, as they resumed their advance. It is also called Kut-al-Amara or Kut-el-Amara. |

For example, at the corps level in August 2004, the Iraqis
requested help in Al Kut near the Iranian border as the Muqtada Al-Sadr
militia threatened stability in Iraq. First we went to Camp Shoupe,
Kuwait, then Iraq--An Nasiriyah, Al Kut, Ad Dwinah, Al Reefah. They dropped four MK 84 2,000-pound Joint
Direct Attack Munitions against an Iraqi command and control facility
near Tallil and two surface-to-air missile systems near Al Kut, both
southeast of Baghdad, Iraq, in response to hostile acts against
coalition aircraft. |
