Asnam, Al-
(formerly Orléansville), a city in northern Algeria, in the Chéliff River valley. Administrative center of the wilaya of al-Asnam. Population, 49,000 (1966). Al-Asnam, a commercial center and transportation junction, has enterprises of the food-processing, leather, and textile industries. In 1978 construction was begun on a major chemical plant.
