Description: Ultimately, the "Ala Kahakai" (Trail by the Sea) will be a continuous walking path, extending along the coastline of Hawaii. It is proposed to extend from 'Upolu Point in North Kohala District to Waha'ula Heiau at the eastern boundary of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The exact location of the trail will be determined after consultation with native Hawaiians, landowners, the Na Ala Hele State-wide Trail and Access System, the National Park Service, and other key stakeholders in every affected region or ahupua'a. The trail will traverse hundreds of ancient Hawaiian settlement sites and more than 200 ahupua'a, or traditional sea to mountain land divisions. It will tell the story of how Hawaiiians flourished as a civilization, Captain Cook's historic landing, the rise of Kamehameha I, and subsequent changes leading to Hawaii's unique blend of cultures.
