In north-central FL, north of Ocala; organized Dec 29, 1824 (prior to statehood) from Duval and Saint Johns counties. Name Origin: For a Seminole Indian town settled by Creek Indians from Oconee, GA. Name derives from luchuwa 'jug,' descriptive of a chasm, probably the Devil's Millhopper, near Gainesville, FL.

Area (sq mi): 969.12 (land 874.25; water 94.88). Pop per sq mi: 256.10.
Pop 2005: 223,852. State rank: 23. Pop change: 2000-20005 2.70%; 1990-2000 20.00%. Pop 2000: 217,955 (White 69.70%; Black or African American 19.30%; Hispanic or Latino 5.70%; Asian 3.50%; Other 3.60%). Foreign born: 7.30%. Median age: 29.00.
Income 2000: per capita $18,465; median household $31,426; Pop below poverty level: 22.80%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $24,010-$26,041.
Unemployment 2004: 3.40%. Change from 2000: 0.80%. Median travel time to work: 21.10 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 6.90%.
