Alagoa Grande
a state in northeastern Brazil, north of the lower reaches of the Sao Francisco River. Area, 27,700 sq km. Population, 13,990 (1967). The town of Maseja is the administrative center and chief port. There are sugar cane plantations on the coastal plain and cotton plantations in the Brazilian Highland. Alagoa Grande also has a food-processing industry and a textile industry. In 1961 construction began on a major hydroelectric power plant on the Sao Francisco River near the Paulo Afonso waterfall, located in the state of Bahia along the border of Alagoa Grande (still under construction in 1969).
