In north-central NC, west of Durham; organized Jan 29, 1849 from Orange County. Name Origin: For Great Alamance Creek, which flows through the county, from an Indian word of uncertain meaning; or for the Battle of Alamance (May 6, 1771).

Area (sq mi): 434.77 (land 429.99; water 4.78). Pop per sq mi: 326.80.
Pop 2005: 140,533. State rank: 18. Pop change: 2000-20005 7.40%; 1990-2000 20.90%. Pop 2000: 130,800 (White 72.50%; Black or African American 18.80%; Hispanic or Latino 6.80%; Asian 0.90%; Other 4.80%). Foreign born: 6.30%. Median age: 36.30.
