Alankara
(Sanskrit for “ornamentation”), poetic ornamentation in Indian poetics. There are two large classes of alankara: arthalankara (artha, “meaning”), which ornaments the meaning of the word, and shabdalankara (shabda, “word”), which ornaments its sound. The most important of the arthalankaras include simile (upama), metaphor (rupaka), hyperbole (atishayokti), and wordplays (shlesha). The shabdalankaras include alliteration (anuprasa), rhyme, and so forth. The first mention of alankara appears in the treatise Bharatiianat’ iashastra (probably third to fifth centuries), which contains an analysis of four rhetorical figures. In later works on poetics, the number of alankaras reaches a hundred and more. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
