Alapaevsk

a city, the center of Alapaevsk Raion, Sverdlovsk Oblast, RSFSR. It is situated on the Neiva River (Ob’ basin) and its tributary, the Alapaikha River. Alapaevsk is a railroad junction, with lines leading to Serov, Nizhnii Tagil, and Cheliabinsk. Population in 1968, 49,000. It is the center of an iron ore area and one of the earliest centers of ferrous metallurgy in the Urals—a plant was founded there in 1704. Alapaevsk is the site of lathe-and machine-building plants, a woodworking combine, and food industry enterprises. An industrial technical school and a medical school are both located in the city. Alapaevsk was founded in 1781.
