Alaskite

    0.03 sec.
alaskite [ə′las‚kīt]
(petrology)
A granitic rock composed mainly of quartz and alkali feldspar, with few dark mineral components.

Alaskite

an abyssal, granitic rock of magmatic, sometimes metasomatic, origin. It consists of quartz (30–35 percent), orthoclase (30–50 percent), and albite (up to 20 percent). It is distinguished by a complete, or almost complete, absence of dark minerals. The structure of alaskite is crystalline and grainy, less often porphyritic, and its color is oxblood red, rose, white, or light gray. The term derives from the name of the Alaskan Peninsula, where the mineral was first observed. It is associated with rare-metal and rare-earth deposits. In the USSR alaskites are found in Middle Asia, the Caucasus, and the Transbaikal region. Alaskite is used as facing stone.
