In central VA, northeast of Lynchburg; organized May 6, 1744 from Goochland County. Name Origin: For William Anne Keppel (1702-54), 2nd Earl of Albemarle, absentee governor of the colony of VA (1737-54).

Area (sq mi): 726.18 (land 722.61; water 3.58). Pop per sq mi: 125.50.
Pop 2005: 90,717. State rank: 19. Pop change: 2000-20005 14.50%; 1990-2000 16.50%. Pop 2000: 79,236 (White 83.60%; Black or African American 9.70%; Hispanic or Latino 2.60%; Asian 2.90%; Other 2.40%). Foreign born: 7.30%. Median age: 37.40.
Income 2000: per capita $28,852; median household $50,749; Pop below poverty level: 6.70%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $33,393-$35,303.
Unemployment 2004: 2.50%. Change from 2000: 0.70%. Median travel time to work: 22.30 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 45.20%.
