Alda, Alan

Alda, Alan (1936–  ) television/movie actor; born in New York City. Developing his satirical style with Second City in New York City, he starred as Hawkeye Pierce in the comedy series M*A*S*H (1972–83), winning four Emmies. He has acted occasionally in films, including Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989), and in 1992 he appeared on Broadway in Jake's Women. He has been an outspoken liberal on many social issues, serving, for example, as the cochair of the campaign to pass the Equal Rights Amendment (1982).
