Aleixandre, Vicente
Born Apr. 26, 1898, in Seville. Spanish poet. Aleixandre was strongly influenced by surrealism in his early works. During the national revolutionary war of the Spanish people (1936–39), he published antifascist poems. His books of poems— The Shadow of Paradise (1944), The Last Birth (1953), and Story of the Heart (1954)—are philosophical and lyrical expressions of general human sentiments, nature, and man, in which man is considered part of nature. His memoirs, Encounters (1958), present portraits of contemporary writers. Along with other figures of Spanish culture, he has protested against the terror and censorship of the Franco regime.
