Smurov, Aleksandr Antonovich 

Born Jan. 3(15), 1884, in St. Petersburg; died Apr. 8, 1937, in Leningrad. Soviet electrical engineer. Honored Scientist and Engineer of the RSFSR (1937).

Smurov graduated from the University of St. Petersburg in 1906 and the St. Petersburg Electrotechnical Institute in 1911. In 1919 he became a professor at the Petrograd (Leningrad) Electrical Engineering Institute; he served as rector of the institute from 1925 to 1929. His principal works were concerned with high-voltage technology and the transmission of electric power over long distances, in particular, the theory of stability of electrical systems and the theory of dielectric breakdown. Smurov developed a number of instruments for high-voltage measurements.
