Novoselova, Aleksandra Vasil’evna
Born Mar. 10 (23), 1900, in the village of Verezino, now in Kashin Raion, Kalinin Oblast. Soviet inorganic chemist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1970; corresponding member, 1953). In 1925, Novoselova graduated from Moscow University, where she became a staff member in 1926. From 1948 to 1955 she was chairman of the department of chemistry. A laboratory is under her direction. Novoselova’s chief works are devoted to compounds of rare elements, particularly beryllium compounds. She has developed methods of synthesizing such compounds and has investigated the compounds’ phase diagrams, physicochemical properties, and structure. Novoselova was the first in the USSR to use chemical gas transport reactions in synthesizing refractory compounds. She and B. P. Sobolev were the first Soviet scientists to obtain single crystals of silicates of beryllium, zinc, aluminum, and manganese. Novoselova received the State Prize of the USSR in 1948 and the M. V. Lomonosov Moscow University Prize in 1970. She has been awarded two Orders of Lenin and various medals.
