Aleksei Nechaev

Nechaev, Aleksei Vasil’evich

 

Born Jan. 19 (31), 1864; died Aug. 26 (Sept. 8), 1915, in Petrograd. Russian geologist and paleontologist.

Nechaev graduated from the University of Kazan in 1887 and became a professor there in 1899; he was a professor at the Kiev Polytechnic Institute from 1903. In 1912 he began working for the Geological Committee in St. Petersburg. His principal works dealt with the stratigraphy and paleontology of the Paleogene deposits of the Volga Region (1897) and the Upper Permian rocks of eastern and northeastern European Russia. In 1915, Nechaev proposed subdividing the Upper Permian beds into three stages (Ufa, Kazan, and Tatar) and described their litho-logical characteristics.
