Zhirmunskii, Aleksei Viktorovich
Born Oct. 15, 1921, in Leningrad. Soviet biologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1972). Member of the CPSU since 1948. Zhirmunskii graduated from Leningrad State University in 1950. He worked for the institutes of experimental medicine of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1954–55) and for the institutes of zoology (1955–57), and cytology (1957–66) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1966 he moved to Vladivostok to head the Institute of Marine Biology of the academy’s Far East Scientific Center (from 1966 to 1969 known as the Institute of Marine Biology of the Far East Branch of the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR). Zhirmunskii’s main works deal with cell physiology, the experimental ecology of marine animals, cellular ecology, and general and comparative physiology. Zhirmunskii has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and several medals. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
