Aleutians West Census Area, Alaska

Southwest of Alaska Peninsula, from the Andreanof Islands in east to the Near Islands in west; bounded on north by Bering Sea and on south and east by Pacific Ocean. Name Origin: Adjective form of Aleut, the natives of the Aleutian Islands. Originally called the Aleutian Islands Census Area; name officially changed Jan 1, 1990.

Area (sq mi): 14116.51 (land 4396.77; water 9719.74). Pop per sq mi: 1.20.
Pop 2005: 5,382. State rank: 19. Pop change: 2000-20005 -1.50%; 1990-2000 -42.30%. Pop 2000: 5,465 (White 37.70%; Black or African American 3.00%; Hispanic or Latino 10.50%; Asian 24.60%; Other 32.40%). Foreign born: 21.50%. Median age: 36.10.
Income 2000: per capita $24,037; median household $61,406; Pop below poverty level: 11.90%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $21,057-$25,885.
