Alexander, John (White) (1856–1915) painter; born in Allegheny, Pa. He began as an illustrator for Harper's Weekly in New York (c. 1874), studied in Germany and Venice (1877), returned to New York (1879), and moved to Paris (1890–1901). He settled in New York (1901), and was a successful portrait painter using an art nouveau style, as seen in Isabella; or the Pot of Basil (1897). How to thank TFD for its existence?
