Alexander of Battenberg

Born Apr. 5, 1857, in Verona; died Nov. 17,1893, in Graz. Prince of Bulgaria from 1879 to 1886.

Alexander’s candidacy for the Bulgarian throne was put forward by Tsar Alexander II in agreement with the other great powers. Basing himself on reactionary elements, the prince carried out a coup d’etat on Apr. 27 (May 9), 1881, and abolished the Tyrnovo Constitution of 1879. His efforts to transform Bulgaria into a stronghold of Austrian and German influence in the Balkans brought him into conflict with the tsarist government. On Aug. 9 (21), 1886, pro-Russian Bulgarian officers arrested Alexander and forced him to abdicate the throne and leave the country.
