Alexandrescu, Sică Vasile

Born Sept. 15, 1896. Rumanian theater director. People’s Artist of the Socialist Republic of Rumania (1959).

Alexandrescu has worked in the theater since 1913. From 1919 to 1928 he was with the National Theater in Cluj, where he staged Moliere’s comedies and the plays of I. L. Caragiale, V. Eftimiu, L. Rebreanu, and others. In the 1930’s and 1940’s he was a director, manager, and producer of private troupes. He facilitated the introduction of plays by national playwrights (M. Sebastian, P. Muşatescu) into theater repertories. From 1947 to 1967 he was stage director at the National Theater in Bucharest, and since 1967 he has been stage director at the Dramatic Theater in Braşov. His productions include almost all the plays of I. L. Caragiale, Gogol’s Inspector General, Goldoni’s The Petty Tyrants, Sebastian’s The Nameless Star, Baranga’s The Raving Lamb, Petrescu’s Bălcescu, and Stefanescu’s Matei Millo.

Alexandrescu has been developing the realist tradition of the Rumanian theater. He was the winner of the SRR State Prize for his productions of Caragiale’s The Lost Letter (1954) and Shtein’s Personal Affair (1957).
