Alexandru Dobrogeanu-Gherea

Born July 2, 1879, in Ploe§ti; died Dec. 4, 1937. A notable figure in the Rumanian labor movement. Son of K. Dobrogeanu-Gherea.

From 1910 to 1920, Dobrogeanu-Gherea was a member of the Socialist Party of Rumania (known as the Social Democratic Party of Rumania from 1910 to 1918) and became a leader of its left wing in 1918. As a delegate to the Second Congress of the Comintern in 1920, he met V. I. Lenin. That same year, Dobrogeanu-Gherea was elected a deputy of the Rumanian Parliament. He joined the Communist Party of Rumania (CPR) in 1921 and was a delegate to the Second (1922), Third (1924), and Fourth (1928) Congresses of the CPR, a member of the auditing commission of the Central Committee of the CPR from 1922 to 1924, and an elected member of the Central Committee of the CPR in 1924. Dobrogeanu-Gherea was repeatedly subjected to arrest. In 1925 he was sent by the Central Committee of the CPR to Moscow to work in the Executive Committee of the Communist International. Dobrogeanu-Gherea joined the ACP (Bolshevik) in 1927, conducted party work in Rumania from 1928 to 1931, and lived and worked in the USSR from 1932 until his death.
