Ali Bey: see Badía y Leblich, Domingo Badía y Leblich, Domingo , 1766–1818, Spanish traveler, known as Ali Bey. Posing as a Muslim, he set out from Cádiz (1803) and traveled through N Africa, Syria, and Arabia, reaching Mecca, of which he fixed the position astronomically.
..... Click the link for more information. . Ali Bey Born in 1728; died May 8, 1773. Mameluke ruler of Egypt from 1763 to 1772. In 1769, Ali Bey rebelled against Turkey; he entered into relations with Russia, which had been at war with Turkey since 1768. In 1772, Ali Bey was overthrown by Mameluke beys who opposed the conflict with Turkey. He fled to Syria and perished during an unsuccessful attempt to restore his power in Egypt.
