Ali-Zade, Abdulkerim Ali-Ogly
Born Jan. 11, 1906, in the village of Bel’ga, in the former Baku District. Soviet orientalist, specialist on the medieval history of Azerbaijan and neighboring countries. Graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Oriental Studies in 1930. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR (1955). Honored Scientist of the Azerbaijan SSR (1960). Director of the History Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR from 1944 to 1950. Acting academician-secretary of the social sciences department of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR in 1955–57. Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Azerbaijan SSR in 1958–63. Ali-Zade has written on the history of feudal relations in the 13th and 14th centuries—the system of land tenure and agrarian and tax policy in the Mongol state in the 13th and 14th centuries, the etymology of taxation terms, and the like. His major work is Socioeconomic and Political History of Azerbaijan in the 13th and 14th Centuries (1956). He published the works of the following authors, with scholarly text criticism: Nizami Gandzhebi (jointly with E. E. Bertel’s, 1947; USSR State Prize, 1948), Rashidaddin (1957, 1965, 1968), and Muhammad Ibn Khindushakh Nakhchevani (1964). REFERENCENarody Azii i Afriki (Peoples of Asia and Africa), 1966, no. 4.
