Alikhanian, Isaak Semenovich 

Born Jan. 26 (Feb. 7), 1876, in Dusheti, Georgia; died Mar. 15, 1946, in Tbilisi. Soviet actor. People’s Artist of the Armenian SSR (1923) and the Georgian SSR (1941).

Alikhanian started his stage career in Baku in 1897 and acted in Tiflis and Rostov-on-Don. He was one of the founders of the G. Sundukian Theater in Yerevan. In 1922 he became a member of the Tbilisi Armenian Theater. His roles included lnok in Shant’s Old Gods, Khlestakov in Gogol’s The Inspector-General, Myshkin in The Idiot based on Dostoevsky’s novel of the same name, Protasov in L. N. Tolstoy’s The Living Corpse, Tsar Fedor Ioannovich in A. K. Tolstoy’s work of the same name, the Baron in Gorky’s The Lower Depths, Neznamov in A. N. Os-trovskii’s Guilty Without Guilt, Platon Krechet in Kornei-chuk’s work of the same name, and Ashot Erkat in Muratsan’s Georg Marzpetuni. Alikhanian was a follower of the psychological school of acting and embodied the best progressive traditions of Armenian and Russian theatrical art.
