Alimarin, Ivan Pavlovich 

Born Aug. 29 (Sept. 11), 1903, in Moscow. Soviet analytical chemist, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1966; corresponding member, 1953). Professor (since 1950) and head of the department of Analytical Chemistry of Moscow State University.

Since 1949, Alimarin has been head of the laboratory of the Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His main scientific research is devoted to the development of methods of quantitative microchemical and ultramicrochemical analysis of minerals, ores, and metals. He has developed theoretical concepts and worked out a procedure for determining traces of impurities in high-purity substances. Alimarin was the first person in the USSR to develop and apply the method of neutron activation determination of impurities in semiconductors. He developed the theoretical groundwork of the separation and determination of rare elements using organic reagents. He has published about 500 scientific papers. He has been awarded two Orders of Lenin and other orders.
