Italian international airline with headquarters in Rome. Although the airline no longer commands monopoly status in its country, as of 2002 the Italian government still owned a majority share of the company.

Italian airline Alitalia, bailed out by prominent local businessmen, will sell Air France-KLM a 25 percent stake for 320 million euros under a cooperation accord, Alitalia official said Monday.
11/12/2008 3:36:39 PM The European Union's transport chief has approved the proposed takeover of bankrupt Alitalia airline but insists it must repay a $380m rescue loan to the Italian government.
Another BA official, Yannick Hoyles, said earlier this month that British Airways would be interested in an alliance with Alitalia but did not want to take a stake in its capital.
