Alitus 

city and administrative center of Alitus Raion, Lithuanian SSR. Alitus is located in the south of the republic, 108 km southwest of Vilnius, and situated on both banks of the Nemunas River. The city has a railroad station and a population of 25,200 (1968). Industry includes factories for home refrigerators, metal construction parts, chemicals, machine-building, and garments. A cotton combine and meat combine were under construction in 1969. Alitus has a technical school. The city was founded in the 14th century.
