(chemistry) The chemical reaction of an aggregate with the alkali in a cement, resulting in a weakening of the concrete. alkali-aggregate reaction A chemical reaction in mortar or concrete between alkalies from portland cement or other sources and certain constituents of some aggregates; under certain conditions, deleterious expansion of the concrete or mortar may result.
