Alkhimov, Vladimir Sergeevich 

Born Oct. 25, 1919, in the village of Nikulino, in what is now Smolensk Raion, Smolensk Oblast. Soviet state figure. Candidate of economic sciences (1951). Hereof the Soviet Union (Mar. 24, 1945). Member of the CPSU since 1942.

The son of a peasant, Alkhimov graduated from the Leningrad Financial and Economic Institute in 1947 and from the All-Union Academy of Foreign Trade in Moscow in 1950. He took part in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45. In the period from 1950 to 1957, Alkhimov was first a department chairman and then a deputy director of the Market Research Institute of the Ministry of Foreign Trade of the USSR. From 1958 to 1960 he was the trade counselor of the USSR in the USA.

Alkhimov was head of the Central Currency Board from 1961 to 1966 and deputy minister of foreign trade of the USSR from 1967 to 1976. In 1976 he became chairman of the administrative board of the State Bank of the USSR. From 1974 to 1977 he was cochairman of the USA-USSR Trade and Economic Council; he was named one of the council’s directors in 1977.

Alkhimov was a deputy to the ninth and tenth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. Alkhimov has been awarded two Orders of Lenin, four other orders, and various medals.
