On the central western border of VA, north of Roanoke; organized 1822 from Bath and Botetourt counties, VA, and Monroe County (now WV). Name Origin: Probably for the Allegheny River, with a variant spelling.

Area (sq mi): 445.67 (land 444.63; water 1.04). Pop per sq mi: 37.60.
Pop 2005: 16,715. State rank: 88. Pop change: 2000-20005 29.30%; 1990-2000 -1.90%. Pop 2000: 12,926 (White 96.10%; Black or African American 2.50%; Hispanic or Latino 0.40%; Asian 0.20%; Other 0.90%). Foreign born: 0.90%. Median age: 41.10.
