Allende, Ignacio

Allende, Ignacio (ēgnä`syō äyān`dā), 1779–1811, Mexican revolutionist. He was a captain in the army when he joined the movement against Spanish domination. He played a prominent part in the revolution and after the great defeat at Calderón Bridge (Jan. 17, 1811) took chief command of the forces. His seizure of power left Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, with whom he had quarreled, only nominal control. The revolutionists went northward, hoping to reach the United States, but the treachery of one of their leaders led to capture by the royalists. Allende was shot at Chihuahua.
