Allison, William B. (Boyd) (1829–1908) U.S. senator; born in Perry, Ohio. A lawyer by profession, he entered Ohio politics and joined the new Republican Party. In 1857 he moved to Iowa and practiced law before going to the U.S. House of Representatives (Rep., Iowa; 1963–72). Although implicated in the Credit Mobilier railroad scandal of 1870, he went on to serve in the U.S. Senate (1873–1908) where he became one of the leaders of the Republican delegation, renowned for his ability to unite opposing groups. A fiscal conservative, he took moderate stands on currency issues such as the Bland-Allison Silver Act (1878). How to thank TFD for its existence?
