allylic substitution [ə¦lil·ik ‚səb·stə′tü·shən] (organic chemistry) A reaction occurring at position 1 of an allylic system (with the double bond between positions 2 and 3) in which the incoming group is attached to the same atom (position 1) as the leaving group, or the incoming group is attached at position 3, with the double bond moving from positions 2 and 3 to positions 1 and 2.
