Alp Arslan, Muhammad Ibn Daud

 

Born 1029 or 1030; died 1072 or 1073. Sultan of the state of the Seljuks from 1063.

Alp Arslan conducted campaigns of conquest against Georgia (1064), Armenia (where he captured Kars and Ani in 1064), Azerbaijan (1064), and Middle Asia (1065). On Aug. 26, 1071, he won a victory over the Byzantine emperor Romanus IV Diogenes at Manzikert (the region of Lake Van) and took him captive. During Alp Arslan’s reign the state was governed by his vizier, Nizam al-Mulk. Alp Arslan was killed during his campaign against Bukhara.
