Alp-Tegin

Date of birth unknown; died circa 963. Founder of the Ghaznevid suzerainty. Alp-Tegin was a Turkish guliam by birth; under the Samanids he attained the post of chief commander of the guards. He directed the affairs of state under the Samanid emir Abd al-Malik, who, fearing the influence of Alp-Tegin, sent him away from the capital after appointing him vicegerent of Khurasan (961). In 962 the forces of Alp-Tegin defeated the Samanid army and captured Ghazni, thus initiating the suzerainty of the Ghaznevids.
