Alphaeus (ălfē`əs). 1 See Cleophas Cleophas (klē`ōfəs), in the New Testament, husband of one of the Marys who stood at the foot of the Cross. 2 Father of the evangelist Matthew Matthew, Saint, in the New Testament, one of the Twelve Apostles. Also called Levi, he was a publican (tax collector) from Capernaum.
