Candolle, Alphonse De
Born Oct. 27, 1806, in Paris; died Apr. 4, 1893, in Geneva. Swiss botanist. Son of A. P. de Candolle. Candolle was a professor at the University of Geneva from 1841. He completed the publication of his father’s work Introduction to the Natural System of the Plant Kingdom (vols. 8-17, 1844-74). One of the founders of plant geography, he studied the principles of the distribution of plants in connection with environmental conditions and geological factors. Candolle also investigated the origin of cultivated plants. He initiated the development of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature and wrote a number of works on the history of science.
