In NE CA on Nevada border, E of Sacramento; organized Mar 16, 1864 from Calaveras, Amador, El Dorado, and Mono counties. Name Origin: For the mountainous terrain of the Sierra Nevada.

Area (sq mi): 743.19 (land 738.62; water 4.57). Pop per sq mi: 1.60.
Pop 2005: 1,159. State rank: 58. Pop change: 2000-20005 -4.10%; 1990-2000 8.50%. Pop 2000: 1,208 (White 71.80%; Black or African American 0.60%; Hispanic or Latino 7.80%; Asian 0.30%; Other 25.40%). Foreign born: 3.20%. Median age: 39.30.
Income 2000: per capita $24,431; median household $41,875; Pop below poverty level: 19.50%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $26,401-$28,222.
