Alpine Riflemen
units in the Italian and French armies, intended for combat in mountain areas. They are recruited primarily from among residents of mountain areas and supplied with equipment and arms adapted for mountain combat. In World War II three Italian alpine divisions were active on the Soviet-German front; they were routed by the Soviet troops. In 1968 the Italian ground forces had two mountain infantry divisions, five alpine brigades, and several alpine battalions (groups); the French ground forces included several alpine units.
