Alsop, Joseph (Wright), Jr. (1910–89) journalist; born in Avon, Conn. He wrote a syndicated political column, "Capital Parade" (1937–40) with Robert Kinter. He interrupted his career for wartime service with the U.S. Navy. In 1946 he started a new column, "Matter of Fact," which he wrote with his brother, Stewart Alsop, until 1958, then by himself until 1974. His interest in archaeology led him to write From the Silent Earth (1964).
