Altan Khan
(literally, “golden khan”). (1) In the 13th century, the title given by the Mongols to emperors of the Chin dynasty. (2) In the 16th century, the title of the prince, or amda, of the Türned in southern Mongolia. (3) In the 17th century, the title given to the princes of the Khotogoit nation of northwestern Mongolia, who were the first in Khalkha (old northern Mongolia) to enter into diplomatic relations with the Russian state. Sholoi Ubashikhuntaizhi, the founder of the Khotogoit dynasty of Altyn khans, received the first Russian ambassador, Vasilii Tiumenets, in 1616.
