AltaVista
(AltaVista Company, Palo Alto, CA, www.altavista.com) The first search engine to index every word on a page and provide a retrieval system to extract relevant information. Developed by Digital's Research Labs in Palo Alto in 1995, the AltaVista search engine is available in more than 25 languages in a variety of versions. In 2003, AltaVista was acquired by Overture. INTERNET BUSINESS NEWS-(C)1995-2002 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD A spokesperson for Internet portal AltaVista has made a statement on the recent block placed on its site by the Chinese Government.
The People Finder allows AltaVista users to search for people nationwide by entering their names or telephone numbers.
CMGI Inc said yesterday that it expects AltaVista Co to go public in January - less than six months after the internet venture fund picked up a majority holding in the internet search engine and portal web site from Compaq Computer Corp.
