alternating gradient [′ȯl·tər·nād·iŋ ′grād·ē·ənt] (electromagnetism) A magnetic field in which successive magnets have gradients of opposite sign, so that the field increases with radius in one magnet and decreases with radius in the next; used in synchrotrons and cyclotrons. | Four types of magnetic measurement tools were used in this study:
vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM) (8,9), alternating gradient force
magnetometer (AGM) (10-12), superconducting quantum-interference-device
(SQUID) magnetometer (13), and inductive-field (B-H) looper (14). Chung and his collaborators analyzed data obtained at
Brookhaven's Alternating Gradient Synchrotron in collisions of
fast-moving pions; with protons in a liquid hydrogen target. He expects
that this maximum stopping range may fall somewhere from the energies of
the SPS down to those of the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron, a proton
accelerator at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, N. |
