Al’tman, Moishe Il’ich
Born Apr. 24 (May 7), 1890, in Lipkany, Bessarabia. Soviet Jewish writer. Al’tman lived in Rumania from 1918 until he settled in the USSR in 1940. His first collection of stories, The Mirage, was published in 1926. Al’tman’s novels and short stories— Vienna Carriage (1935), Medresh Pinkhas (1936), and The Butterflies (1939)—depict the life of Jewish workers in Bessarabia and the Jewish intelligentsia. In 1949 he published The Roots (Russian translation 1959), a collection of short stories about the war years.
