Alvarado Monzón, Bernardo
Born Nov. 8, 1925, in Guatemala; died 1972. Figure in the Communist movement of Guatemala. Son of a lawyer, Alvarado studied law at the university and took an active part in the student movement. In 1949 he was elected to the Central Committee and the Political Commission of the Central Committee of the Guatemalan Labor Party (PGT). In 1949–54 he was PGT Central Committee secretary for organizational matters. In 1954 he was elected general secretary of the Central Committee of the PGT. He was arrested in 1955, but as a result of public protests he was released in 1956. Banished to Honduras, he later returned illegally to Guatemala. In September 1963 he was again arrested and was tortured. As a result of a campaign in his defense he was freed, but shortly after he was banished from Guatemala. In October 1972 he was arrested together with a group of PGT Central Committee members, tortured, and brutally killed. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
