Am386

An earlier 386-compatible CPU chip from AMD introduced in 1991. Because its frontside bus ran at the same speed as the CPU, Am386 chips rivaled the 486 in performance and were popular among the budget conscious. The first 386-compatible CPU, the Am386 was AMD's own design rather than a second source for Intel CPUs (see Am286). See Am486 and AMD.

In addition to our financial results, 1994 was a year of significant milestones for AMD including victories in litigation with Intel over microcode license rights in March and the recent California Supreme Court ruling which upheld our rights to any Intel intellectual property in the Am386 microprocessor family.
In an unrelated proceeding earlier this year, unanimous jury verdicts upheld AMD's license rights to use Intel microcodes, including the microcode in the Am386 microprocessor family.
