Born Sept. 5, 1908, in Carpaneto, Piacenza. Italian physicist. Member of the Accademia dei Lincei in Rome (since 1948).
Amaldi graduated from the University of Rome in 1929 and was a student of E. Fermi. He has been teaching at the University of Rome since 1937 and has been president of the Italian National Committee for Nuclear Research since 1945 and director of the National Institute for Nuclear Physics since 1948. Amaldi’s main research has been on atomic spectroscopy and the physics of elementary particles. In 1934 he discovered, with Fermi and other scientists, the retardation of neutrons in substances containing hydrogen. He made a contribution to the study of the tau-meson, hyperons, and antiprotons. He has been a foreign member of the USSR Academy of Sciences since 1958.
